World of Discarded Computers

Computer gang

Obsolete Computer Gangs

How would you like to be walking down a dark alley one night and run into this gang? If you're like me, you'd probably be very excited. But then, I'm trained to deal with the rampant problem of gangs of obsolete computers. This is a rapidly growing problem to which, so far, many people have turned a blind eye. As hardware becomes obsolete, it is often cast out. Homeless, its only refuge is often found in gangs formed with other obsolete systems.

I try to save these systems from their downward spiral and return them to a productive life. At the very least, I try to provide them with shelter until such time as a new home can be found. But I can't do it alone. Without your help, this problem will only get worse and will soon reach epidemic proportions. If you know of one of these systems which is in need of rescue, or have one hiding in a closet, then email me (dlw@trailingedge.com) and together we can try and rescue it.

System guts

Wanted Systems

Help to save other systems from a fate like this, stripped of everything but their bare essentials. You can help locate these systems and restore their dignity. Where they once held positions of power in society, they are now looked on with scorn by many people who don't realize that most can still be extremely useful even in this day of mega-giga-bytes.

Unfortunately, most have become so elusive that I've had to issue alerts to inform the public of their status. We also have a more text friendly version of the wanted posters. Let's face it, not all of these systems care to be burdened with lots of graphics and many just don't want to have to deal with frames or tables.

In use

Rehabilitated Systems

Take a look at some of the systems we have successfully rehabilitated and returned to a productive life. Again we have a text friendly version. You can see which systems have been rescued, which have been restored and which need your help to complete their restoration. Or you can revisit a time when there was excitement in the microcomputer world, before everything was P.C. and there was a wide variety of systems instead of endless clones.

You may also be interested in reading some old reviews from a time before these systems were considered trailing-edge. Text friendly version provides as well. We also maintain a library of Classic Computer Magazines. Hardware isn't the only thing which needs to be rescued. Software, catalogs, fliers, books and manuals all have a place here.

Video Brain

Video Game Systems

Of course, where computers have been known to play an occasional joke, the real clowns of the silicon world are the video game machines. Subject to an even shorter life span than many of their more general purpose cousins, most have plenty of fight left in them. We now try to rescue these playful scamps as well. You can see the lucky ones in their full glory, or in a setting suitable for faster text viewing.

A Final Plea

Finally, if you have any of these items which are hiding in your closet, taking up space in the living room or stalking your home or office at night then why not email me (dlw@trailingedge.com). We may be able to help you out and provide a worthy home for those old systems, books, software, etc. Or if you just have some interesting bit of history, comment or info to pass along, I'd still like to hear from you.
